Background

Simon joined the Learning Centre in 2003 as Coordinator, Programs and Services.  As Assistant Director Simon was responsible for the development of student support programs and services, building a staff team and the re-establishment of the Chapman Learning Commons. Prior to joining the Learning Centre Simon worked for the Information Services Division of the UBC Library where he was responsible for coordinating instructional programs and services.  Simon also managed UBC Library’s first virtual reference service, eHelp, and was involved in the development of the province-wide AskAway Virtual Reference Service for public and academic libraries.

Current Role and Responsibilities

The Director, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre provides leadership, vision and strategic direction for the UBC Library’s student and community engagement initiatives, library-wide teaching and learning programs and administration of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre including its facility, budget, staff and programs.

Specific duties include:
  • Administration of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre including its facility, budget, staff and programs
  • Administration of the Chapman Learning Commons
  • Providing leadership for the Library’s community outreach and engagement initiatives including alumni
  • Providing leadership for the Library’s student engagement initiatives including student well-being and intercultural understanding
  • Providing leadership for Library-wide teaching and learning programs and distance learning support
  • Support for fundraising within portfolio
