Irving K. Barber Learning Centre Tour Event Description

Opened in April 2008, the Learning Centre provides a welcoming and dynamic teaching and learning environment with classrooms, informal learning spaces and library resources and services. Constructed around the core of the Main Library, the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre demonstrates the fundamental relationship between the heritage of the past and the potential of the future. Come and tour one of the most spectacular study spaces at a Canadian University.
The Learning Centre maintains a historical 1925 core and has either reused or recycled a number of the features from the old library. Located in the 1925 core, the Chapman Learning Commons and the Ridington Reading Room have beautiful woodwork and stained glass windows. The building is home to over 2 million volumes, as well as 1.8 million books contained in the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). It also houses the famous Wallace B. Chung and Madeline H. Chung Collection, which contains more than 25,000 rare and unique items, and will be open for the public to drop-in from 12:00 pm-4:00 pm on Alumni Weekend.
One of the most appealing aspects of the building is that it features stunning artwork: hundreds of glass-blown plates, a large chandelier-like piece made of starfire glass, and several glass bookshelves. IKBLC hosts artist exhibitions from individuals or groups from within UBC, as well as members from the greater community.
